The Coffee Challenge...01/12/09
The Challenge: Show us your interpretation of the word, "Coffee."
The Participants: Kre8ive, John (300m), Karina Boese, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, MyKey, Trevlan, Fotoeffects, Hillary, and myself.
The Result: I figured it was time to have some fun with one of these challenges and this one had me laughing my butt off. When setting this one up I started off in my studio and set the Still Life Stage up. Well there wasn't enough room for me to set the lighting up the way I wanted so I brought all my stuff upstairs to my kitchen area and set up on the table. Lighting used was a Nikon SB-600 with portable soft box attached to the left table height @ 7 O'Clock for shadow fill and as the main light SB-800 with mini soft box at 5 O'Clock placed on the floor and aimed upward @ 45'. Both units were triggered using Nikon wireless TTL system. The SB-600 was triggered as a Rear Curtain at 1/8 power and the SB-800 fired straight out @ 1/4 power bouncing 1/2 of the light off the ceiling which is white. A small 2' round white reflector was placed on a chair at 1/2 the height of the table facing the left side of the doll for slight filling purposes. I used my Nikkor 18-200 VR and shot the image from 7 O'Clock from about 3' away with the camera twisted to the right.

Shot in RAW I headed for CS3 Bridge to adjust the Blacks and then into CS3 where a touch of NIK Color Efex was used to boost color slightly and then Focal Point for some addition DOF & Movement Blur were added. Finishing off with OnOne Frames 3 to give it the black custom blurred vignette and then OnOne Photo Tools to add the Black frame & Key line. Total Time Spent was about 40 min. from start to finish !

PS: I had a lot of fun with this because I had a HELPER, my cat Oreo saw the need to hop on the table to SUPERVISE me but he kept knocking the doll & coffee bag over until I asked him to please stop which he did but only after destroying the set just one more time LOL. I laughed so hard during this one that it was worth doing the shoot just for the humor I got from Oreo. I guess the smell of the coffee attracted him to the set but I refused to make him a cup because he's wired enough without having extra caffeine running through his system :) So instead he went over to the Water Cooler and got himself a drink, yes he DRINKS from the Water Cooler by himself and doesn't spill or waist a drop. I shot a frame of him doing his little trick, if you'd like to check it out CLICK HERE

Thanks for looking at my challenge shot this week folks !

Bill Pador > Challenge Code for 12/1/08 PLANE or PLAIN

The Plane (or Plain) Challenge...12/01/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the word "Plane" (or "Plain").
The Participants: Kre8ive, John (300m), Karina Boese, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, and myself.
The Result: PLAIN According to Roget's Thesaurus says "Florid, Rich, Flowery & Elegant so here I display an Elegant, Rich Flowery Japanese fan turned into an Elegant piece of Artistic Art-Deco Modern Art. Many levels of post production have gone into this and I really enjoyed building this piece of art. A full shot of the fan was taken and then a copy made, flipped and attached to the original mounted sideways. The color contrast was adjusted and then sharpened. Then a whole bunch of levels were created to come up with this rendition to include a ghost frame. To see the full detail be sure to view it in X-Large Format. It came out so cool looking to me that I'm going to get this printed in large format and frame it on my wall. This was a very fun challenge for my & I had a ball with this one. Thanks for looking and I hope you all enjoy your day! ~Bill~
Bill Pador > "Colorful Japanese Fan"
This beautiful Japanese Fan was on my in laws mantel which I spotted during our Thanksgiving Feast yesterday and after dinner I managed to grab some wonderful shots of this colorful decoration. I shot this one from a weird angle from the top down using my SB-800 to back light it by flashing it from the back through it to enhance the colors & detail a bit. This is one of the small mid-point shots of the fan but I did get some full size images too but decided to post this one for today's POD. Very little post was needed here, just a small amount of sharpening, level adjustment and the canvas frame is all that I used.

"Open Letter on My Thoughts about Mumbai & Hershy"
~. . .I received another letter from Harsh at 23:38 hours Est. tonight which I will post along with my personal response to him below. It seems that this horrific event for him & his country has come to an end and now the people of India can begin to morn their dead & wounded. It is a sad day for the world over and I know the feelings they must be going through after personally being affected by 9-11 here. The scale of the attack does not matter, if only 1 person had lost their life it would be the same, but when you get into the hundreds of dead & wounded it does change the enormity of the situation and makes it that much worse for everyone the world over.

Someone had mentioned in a post to me yesterday that I Must have seen a lot of things like this as a cop and I must say that between my military service & 13 years on the mean streets of NJ I indeed have seen my share of unnecessary death & destruction along with meaningless cowardly acts of terrorism. The situation never changes, just the faces of the people who pay the ultimate price during these terrible events are different. I always used to try to make sense of these things in MY MIND in order to justify why someone would do this to innocent people, but I never ever came up with an answer nor could I find a reason in my heart to make sense of it. That's because there is NO way a normal person could conclude what terrorist do is right in any way no matter what their motives. It is WRONG, DISPICABLE & COWARDLY to perform these acts of this nature and I for one believe that every one of these terrorist should be wiped from the face of the earth never to be heard from again, PERIOD! Now I've said my personal peace about this and will say no more.

I want to Thank each & every one of you for passing on your thoughts & prayers to our fellow member & friend Hershy through my web pages to make life easier for him and to enable him to see how much he & his family are cared about by friends & fellow artists here at the dailies. We are a small tight & closely knit family of artists & photographers who share many things in common but most importantly is that we are all caring human beings no matter where in the world we are from. God Speed to all of you and it's been my pleasure & honor to be able to put this together in a pinch. I became a soldier & police officer because I really do care about people and this has enabled me to once again help another person in need which is what I was born to do and gives me great pleasure & satisfaction to be able to perform this service to Harsh and all of you. So THANK YOU ALL for allowing me to contribute my assistance during this difficult time in the world !

Sincerely,
~Bill~

"Last Letter from Harsh 23:38 hrs. 11-29-08 & My Response to Him"
Dear Bill,

Just over an hour ago the authorities announced that 3 terrorists were killed in the Taj and one may have been captured alive. With this the siege of the Taj ends and the troops are going through each room to check for hostages, stranded guests, suspicious people and items (bombs etc). The ordeal started almost 60 hours ago also seems to have come to an end. There will be joy for people who made it back to safety and sadness for those who didn't. Whatever, the lives of people of Mumbai have changed forever.

Unlike western countries, many offices are open on Saturdays, some for half day. We work full day and I will soon leave for work. I will keep you posted if any new developments crop up but sincerely hope I won't have to.

Bill, I once again thank you for all your efforts in keeping me joined to the others through these days. I also thank all those who have sent me mails, comments and other messages of strength, solidarity and comfort.

May those who have lost their lives rest in peace.

with warm regards,

Harsh

~RESPONSE~

Hi Harsh,

Glory be to God that this has finally come to an end for you & your country. It has been a sad day to watch these events unfold and know the deep hurt everyone will feel for the rest of their lives because of this. IN the end it will all make you & your country STRONGER and you will bounce back as a stronger nation & people. The terrorist fail to learn that these things make countries stronger against them and that you will now take the fight TO THEM because of these terrible events. As the General of the Japanese Navy said before the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942 "I fear that we will awake a sleeping giant by doing this" and he was 100% RIGHT. That is what will happen to your nation now and the terrorist will pay the ultimate price and I'm sure India will make sure that everyone who was killed will not die in vein my friend.

It has been my pleasure & I have been honored to keep every one in touch with your situation and to bring us all together during this tragic event, so no thanks are needed my friend. We have all been worried & concerned about you, your family & friends so I felt it was my duty & responsibility to do this for you. I hope that things will return to normal as quickly as possible for you and that you can all put this behind you soon enough so that the terrorists actions do not effect you the way they intended it to do. We as a people have won in the end as always and hopefully some day these terrorist will no longer be able to terrorize innocent people of any nation. That is my wish that I know will probably never come true but it is good to think that way which is a positive step in beating them at their own game.

My condolences to your friends who have lost their lives and Peace be with you & your nation for a speedy recovery Harsh. I'm so happy that you are OK and look forward to your return on the dailies under better conditions.

Your Friend & Carrying Representative of the United States as a common People,

Bill
Bill Pador > Interesting & Fun photo
Bill Pador > I was out looking for a good lake scene to capture one day and found this colorful canoe tied up. Given a selective color treatment in post and a frame compliments of OnOne Frame Pro 3.

Funny thing is that it was a crystal clear day when I was getting ready to shoot this and within 90 seconds it went from sunny to a near BLIZZARD where visibility went down to almost zero and I froze my you know what off trying to make it back to the car since I only had a light jacket on. Very freaky storm in deed
Bill Pador > This cool looking fly was giving off a PRISM Effect in the direct sunlight while buzzing around some bushes and I managed to get a captures where I got some great Bokeh on the back of the wings and get his eyes in focus. You never see a bug this close up with your eyes and see things much different through a 1:1 Macro lens that's for sure. Their kinda gross but interesting on the other hand.
Bill Pador > A Rusty old railroad spike that held some interesting rust patterns & color to it, it's actually a pretty small spike around 5" long and about 1" around but by using a low angle shot and getting within 2" of the lens glass and 1:1 magnification and great Bokeh of the backdrop it looks huge.
Bill Pador > This WATER WALL is actually a small table top fountain that changes light every second. Shot in Macro from a distance of about 3" from the floor up gives this shot a look of a REAL "BIG" Water Wall you might find in a office building lobby. This is straight out of the camera with no post production work what so ever! Pretty neat huh ?
