Bill Pador > "Glowing Crystal Glass"
Well I felt it time I get back to my artistic roots today instead of a plain old photo image and have a little fun. I wanted to use a simple item to create an colorful art deco abstract & have the finished piece to have some color, depth & height to it giving it a feel of being in a tunnel or black hole on acid LOL.

What you are looking at is a simple macro shot of a Blue Stem wine glass which I sat on top of a multi colored light stand and shot it at 90' directly over the top looking down. The colors you see have NOT been manipulated what so ever and is as they came out of the camera, the outer edge has been blurred using FOCAL POINT to add some artistic depth and to bring the eye toward the center of the shot, leaving the center sharp & in tact. The black area between the 2 is the dead space around the glass where the light did not diffract or carry through the glass.

Next step was to create an artistic frame to add more depth to the shot and create a art deco finish to the piece. This was accomplished using Photo Tools and creating a simple grey 2D box frame and then adding a slight white glow to the edges and then a slim black line to border it giving it a 3D effect and some height. Next was to add the slim red line around the frame and then a 10 pixel black border. Finishing up using 'Pro Frames 3' I went in and used a simple edge frame and blurred it almost 90% using white as the color outline which created the marbleizing effect you see. This had to be done 4 times rotating the effect 90' each application until the marble effect was all the way around the frame.

There you have it, using a simple wine glass & cheap $5.00 4 Color LED light stand, a few photoshop plug ins and a little imagination & creativity I give you a pretty cool Abstract Art Deco Piece I'll call the GLOWING CRYSTAL GLASS ! LOL

The Result:"Get Your Life On TRACK - Start Eating Healthy"

For this challenge I must admit I broke out the BIG GUNS for this one, Lighting was provided using my FULL studio set including 2 reflectors to acquire enough light & shadows to pull this off. (3) 600 watt BRITEK studio lights from side, front & over head, 3' square Britek HALO PRO soft Boxs on 2, white brilly on the other. Shot in NEF (RAW format) First work was done in Lightroom 2 Then into CS3 for the final touches, total time spent was approx. 90 min. on this one. Enjoy folks and have a great prosperous day!

Bill Pador > 'Artistic HDR Abstract' - "GHOSTLY COUPLE DRINK WINE"
~best viewed large~
Tonight I was at home relaxing when my good friend John Murphy gave me a call from his vacation location (BTW-He sends his regards to everyone). Well we were BS-ing & started discussing photography (imagine that) while I was setting up my POD for today in my still life studio which 'WAS' planned out to be a simple shot of 4 Crystal Glasses set up a certain way so that I could get an effect I had thought up. Well our conversation happen to change to HDR some how which made me scrap my original idea in turn for an HDR capture of the glasses.

"The Set-Up & Post Production Details"
The original image/layer of the Glasses themselves you see have very little post done to it after the HDR tone mapping believe it or not. I set the studio up with several small canister lights and covered them with 2 colored plastic cups you use for outdoor for BBQ's and such (not the throw away kind but thick picnic re-washable type) that were laying on the table from a previous project I just happened to see and decided to see what effects I could get using them over some lights. 1 Blue and 1 Purple plastic cup covered light were set to the left of the crystal glasses pointing towards 2 separate 12" x 12" mirror squares on both sides to reflect the light back onto the stem ware. The crystal glasses have black stems with a small flower type design just under the glass itself (you can see the light reflected on this part in color). The glasses were lined up straight behind each other and then the shot was made off-setting the camera about 25' to the right allowing the glasses to appear in a diagonal pattern. (5) bracket shots were made with a total exposure adjustment of +1.0 EV capturing the colored light reflecting off the stems and through the crystal in complete darkness with just the 2 small 40 watt bulbs casting their magic making it look like the glasses had neon lights on them (perfect for a HDR project I thought)

The (5) RAW images were then combined into an HDR and then tone mapped in Photomatix Pro 3 and saved. Passing into CS3 the image was then sharpened slightly and saved. I then made a copy of the image, flipped it horizontally 180' to make a mirrored image and combined the 2 on an adjusted re sized canvas. After cropping I was really impressed with the results and almost posted it as is but really felt in an artistic mode so I carried it to the next step. Multiple layers were constructed and I began airbrushing in the slight white cloud texture on the sides to frame it using the shapes of a man & woman preparing to drink (look closely you should see the shadows of them - man on right woman on left), then another layer was added to extend the canvas and I began molding the orange smoke you see (which was a smoke image I had captured for my smoke art project) I combined approx. 12 layers of smoke (all the same image section) at different angles were laid down then erasing the edges with a soft brush and changing opacity levels while rotating them into place resulted in the effect you see on the final smoke/fire shape (*representing the adult madness that shadow couple will have after those drinks LOL). *Just a note: Only a small cropped section of the original smoke image was used, the same cropped piece was used to create the entire orange platform image you see here by pasting & rotating it with various opacity levels.

Thanks to John Murphy for inspiring me to create this image, without you John I would have been done with my POD in 30 min. or less but since we had our HDR conversation it resulted in a FOUR & HALF hour mega project (I'll get you back don't worry pal LOL) Really tho Thanks John, it;s really amazing how your artistic mind is inspired by everyday things. Hope you like it ~Bill~

*Mr. Murphy is unable to sign onto SmugMug for uploads where he is on vacation due to a poor internet connection, but is doing his POD's everyday and will upload upon his return at the end of the week. . .

Bill Pador > "Shades of Grey"
Today's image comes from an old idea with a new twist. The classic side by side crystal glasses filled with water with my flair added. The idea of this capture was to somehow manage multiple SHADES OF GREY through out the entire image. I wanted to challenge myself with this one, it took quite a while to figure out how I was going to complete it (about 4 hours) but I succeeded and quite happy with the results.

Study the image and you will see that I accomplished my project by having shades of gray blended into black in all quadrants. The glasses, water, stems, background and even the frame reverse the shades from side to side and top to bottom. Even the top of the water line is shaded different on each side.

I would love to explain the set up but it is so detailed that I would be here forever, but let it be known that there are NO Photoshop tricks in this image, it was ALL done with lighting techniques along with Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO settings. The background is 4 different sheets of poster board (2 white 2 black) laid out side by side on the wall and table surface. Lighting was provided by a single 60 watt fluorescent desk lamp positioned high above and slightly off center and then angled into the background to change the shade of the poster board. Then various home made reflectors were placed around the set to properly utilize light bouncing off the glasses & backdrop get the effect I was striving for. The framing contains 4 samples of color taken with the eye dropper directly off the image and then the final out side frame being created in OnOne Pro Frame 3.1 generator plug-in software.

Shutter Speed: 1/6 Sec.

The image was originally shot in RAW format and then converted in PS using Camera RAW with only small adjustments made to the total black levels and then a few dust spots removed on the right glass from the paper towel lint I missed while cleaning the glasses prior to the shot LOL. *(TIP: When photographing glass close up be sure to use a LINT FREE cloth for cleaning, you'll be surprised at how much a small amount of lint will screw up your shot causing timely processing adjustment being needed to correct the flaws.) Once in CS3 I used Alien Skin Exposure 2 B&W Film filter for the conversion using the ILFORD HP5 Plus 400 (Grain Off) Black & White Film Push filter.
